“Orange Caps” on the go– 2015 Wärtsilä China Beach Clean-up Day

Local news 5 June 2015 at 03:00 UTC+2

On May 29th, 2015, themed as Shipping to a Cleaner Ocean, the 2015 Wärtsilä China Beach Clean-up Day was implemented on the beach in Shanghai Nanhuizui Sea View Park with around 50 volunteers from Wärtsilä China and local communities.

It’s commonly concerned that marine litters that are thrown away or deserted along the coast are becoming an increasingly pressing issue, which is threatening marine creatures and even go into the human food chain. As a corporate citizen, Wärtsilä continued its active role in supporting the society and making contribution to the local community through CSR projects in 2015 following the successful planning and execution of its ‘Action for Love’ project in 2014.

Meanwhile, as a company that offers complete marine solutions, Wärtsilä would like to encourage its employees to contribute to local community in the programs that can be associated with Wärtsilä’s businesses and enhance the awareness of marine environmental protection. What’s more, the program activity was also designed to further strengthen employee proudness, self–belonging and loyalty to the company. Based on that context, Wärtsilä China teamed up with a Shanghai-based influential non-profit organization called “HandsOnShanghai“,which is dedicated to provide flexible volunteer programs and serve local charities in needs, and planned this Beach Clean-up Day.

As one of the most important components of the WCN corporate social responsibilities campaign this year, the Beach Clean-up Day received very positive support from many employees across different departments and disciplines in WCN. Some of them even brought their children and family members to participate in this meaningful event. The clean-up activity was carried out together with 36 members of Wärtsilä China employees and more than 10 student volunteers from Shanghai Maritime University work together to clean beaches. Every volunteer wore an orange Wärtsilä branded cap, which generated much attention from the people passing by as it was an enlightening scenery at the coastline.

Volunteers were divided into six teams and different tasks such as picking-up trashes, sacking garbage bags and trash data collection, were assigned to team members for more efficient cooperation. The team spirit was so strong that after a half-day cleaning, a total of 281.1kgs of trashes along the coastline were picked up. One of the team stood out with their great performance in picking up124.4kgs of litters, which was almost half of the total weight.

Going forward, Wärtsilä China will continue to pursue its corporate citizenship programs drawing on its technology and talents to protect and recover the ecological status of our environment.
