Wärtsilä and Shanghai Maritime University sign dual fuel engine cooperation agreement for new laboratory establishment

Wärtsilä has signed a cooperation agreement with Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), a leading multi-disciplinary university with a special emphasis on shipping technology and management. The agreement was signed in Shanghai on 27th June 2017. According to the agreement, Wärtsilä will provide a Wärtsilä 6L20DF engine to help SMU to establish a dual fuel engine laboratory and cover part of engine equipment costs as donation to SMU.

The objective of this agreement is to facilitate academic training, helping the students in SMU improve the knowledge of the design, manufacture and application of marine engines, especially dual-fuel engines, to provide practical operating platforms, and to cultivate interest and future aspirations in marine related industries.

The Wärtsilä 20DF engine is one of the most popular engine types in the market. Shipping is on-going a transformation towards more efficient and environmental friendly solutions. Wärtsilä has been and is the clear fore runner and enabler for this transformation with dual fuel engines and best engine efficiency in the market. Wärtsilä 4-stroke DF engines have been gaining more than 12 millions running hours in more than thousand customer installations.

The DF engine is expected to be delivered to SMU in mid of 2018 and the new laboratory is expected to be inaugurated in late of 2018.

Wärtsilä and SMU has collaborated in different areas for many years. Wärtsilä China has initiated annual scholarship program at SMU to reward outstanding academic performance and provide timely help to those students from poor families for more than a decade now. Each year, Wärtsilä China prioritizes its recruitment for the students from those universities, and has established a solid long-term platform for on-job practice and employment. Moreover, SMU and Wärtsilä China inaugurated a Wärtsilä Exhibition Hall at Shanghai Maritime University to promote Wärtsilä’s technology and brand to talented young minds as they embark on their career in the marine industry.
